Entry categories

National Capital Art Prize entries can portray any vision and be painted in any medium including oil, acrylic, watercolour, mixed media, or pencil, therefore minimising restrictions often placed on artists in competitions.

Each artist can enter up to four different paintings in any combination of the following four categories.

N—01

Open Prize

offering a $15,000 prize plus the opportunity for a solo or joint exhibition for the winner

N—02

First Nation Prize for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander artists

offering a $15,000 prize plus the opportunity for a solo or joint exhibition for the winner

N—03

Landscape Prize

offering a $5,000 prize plus the opportunity for a solo or joint exhibition for the winner

N—04

Student Prize

for current tertiary art students, with a $2,500 prize to go towards their education

Additional special awards

  • Through an online voting process, a People’s Choice Prize of $2,500 will be awarded
  • An Art Scholarship valued at $5,000. In 2021 the Art Scholardhip is in partnership with the Australian National University (ANU) and available for current ANU students only

Sale opportunity

All finalists’ works will be made available for sale at the exhibition at a price nominated or approved by the artist.

Entry fee

Categories one, two and three incur a $50 entry fee for each painting entered. Category 4 is for students only and incurs a $30 entry fee for each painting entered.
